We love Color!

Summer is so close I can see it! In the studio our conversations on upcoming designs will usually trail off topic or sprint in other directions as everyone has their own thoughts. Lately we have been discussing the endless possibilities of color combinations with prints, inks, dyes, ties and accents which lead us to a side topic of our universal love for Crayola Crayons.

In 1903 there were only 8 colors available, now in 2011 there are 120 colors. Crayola has renamed, revamped, and recreated their product to grow with the times. My personal favorite color is Magenta (yes it's pink).

Each of us has our own story on why we love Crayola Crayons. As a kid it gave me an avenue to be creative and play with colors. Even now if I am at a restaurant and there is a set of crayons I will be sitting there off in my own world coloring. I can remember being at my Grandmother's house with a fresh box of 64 crayons, the built in sharpener in the back and a huge stack of princess coloring books with a big smile on my face. I bet my Grandmother liked it too because it was the only time I was ever quiet.

In kindergarten, I definitely stole crayons - the coveted Crayola ones. I would go up to the area where we stored our crayons when I thought no one was looking, and stuff my sweater pockets with crayons! It was a ride down memory lane when years later I opened up a pencil box containing red and yellow-green crayons that had another child's name on it... Now I have my very own box of 96 colours - complete with its own sharpener!!

when I was small, every fall we would collect and press leaves, place them on a piece of wax paper, then take our trusty red, orange, yellow and brown crayons and grate them over the leaves. After that, we would place another piece of wax paper over top and run an iron over everything which melted the wax. It kind of created a 6 year old's version of "stained glass". I thought they were beautiful!

My favourite memory with my Crayolas was when I discovered them melting in the summer sunshine on our walk. I had a lot of questions for my mother who explained why they melted and then I began melting them on purpose. I found a little plastic square that worked perfectly as a mold and I began making my own crayons with the unused bits. What a thrill!

Crayons are magical! The smell of a new box of crayons awakens the senses of creativity. I love the greens and blues...a new coloring book and box of crayons could keep me busy for hours when I was a child and can now for that matter.

I loved meticulously outlining each area and then filling it in with less pressure to get lighter colour.

I used crayons to colour code my sister's closet too.

Probably no surprise to most people who know me...
